MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — The Mountaineer VEX Robotics Competition is back at West Virginia University for its third consecutive year, bringing together over 80 teams from across the East Coast.
From Feb. 21st to 23rd, middle school, high school and university-level students will gather at the WVU Student Recreation Center to showcase their skills in robot design and problem-solving.
The competition will feature an elimination-style format, where teams will compete to build and program robots capable of completing complex tasks. The top-performing teams will earn the chance to advance to the VEX Robotics World Championship, set to take place in Dallas, Texas, from April 25th to May 3rd.
The Mountaineer VEX Robotics Competition is not only about high-tech battles, but also about fostering key skills for the future. By participating, students develop vital abilities in robotics, team-building and problem-solving skills that are crucial in today’s rapidly growing tech industry.
Through competitions like the VEX Robotics Challenge, students gain exposure to STEM fields and are inspired to pursue careers in technology, engineering, and robotics. It’s an opportunity for them to explore potential careers while gaining valuable, real-world experience.
WVU Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources Outreach and Recruitment Specialist Julie Gruber further discussed the importance of the competition.
“Competitions like this help students gain hands-on experience and prepare for careers in robotics and related fields, all while strengthening their teamwork and communication abilities.”
The competition will be held at WVU on the following schedule:
- Friday, February 21: University teams will compete from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Saturday, February 22: High school teams will take the stage from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Sunday, February 23: Middle school teams will wrap up the event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
