LIVES. WELL, AS TECHNOLOGY CONTINUES TO ADVANCE, STUDENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY PLAN TO USE IT TO THEIR BENEFIT FOR THE FUTURE. WVTM 13 BRYCE JOSLIN ATTENDED A LOCAL ROBOTICS COMPETITION TODAY, AND STUDENTS SAY THEY’RE USING THE BOTS TO BUILD FOR TOMORROW. THREE, TWO, ONE. IT’S A SCHOOL DAY RIGHT NOW. IT IS 1148, RIGHT? I SHOULD BE IN FOURTH PERIOD. NO, I’M HERE AND I’M HAVING FUN AND I’M MEETING NEW PEOPLE AND I’M MAKING FRIENDS. ALEXANDER CARROLL IS ONE OF THE MORE THAN 100 STUDENTS COMPETING IN THE CITY OF OXFORD’S VEX ROBOTICS COMPETITION. IF I GET TO BE A ROBOTICS ENGINEER AND WORK ON THOSE HUGE THINGS, YOU KNOW, AT HONDA, AT CRONUS BAM, ALL THESE BIG GIANT ROBOTS, IF I GET TO DO THAT, THAT’S GOOD MONEY. THAT’S A GOOD JOB, AND I’M HAPPY WITH THAT. CARROLL SAYS HE AND HIS OXFORD TEAM SPENT SIX MONTHS BUILDING THEIR ROBOT FOR THE COMPETITION. FIRST OF ALL, YOUR ROBOT ON ITS OWN IS COMPLICATED. YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE TO BUILD THE THINGS, PROGRAM EVERYTHING. IT’S A LOT OF PROBLEMS. BUT HIS PASSION MADE THE TIME FLY. IT TAKES A LOT OF THOUGHT, AND IT’S THE KIND OF PROBLEM THAT I LOVE SOLVING. EDUCATORS SAY THE COMPETITION ALLOWS STUDENTS TO LEARN ABOUT THE TRIALS AND ERRORS OF BUILDING. IT IS THE PLANNING, BUT ALSO JUST THE DOING. YOU JUST HAVE TO START DOING SOMETHING AND THEN GOING BACK AND MAKING THOSE CORRECTIONS AND MAKING IT BETTER. AS THE COMPETITION ENDS, CARROLL PLANS TO USE WHAT HE’S LEARNED ON THE COLLEGIATE LEVEL. I GOT ACCEPTED INTO AUBURN UNIVERSITY OFF THE FACT THAT I HAVE A 30 ACT AND A LOT OF ROBOTICS EXPERIENCE. More than 100 students gathered in Oxford on Thursday to participate in the VEX V5 Robotics Competition, using technology to enhance their future prospects.Alexandr Carroll, a member of the CREATE Robotics team, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, saying, “It’s a school day right now, it is 11:48 a.m., I should be in 4th period, but no, I’m here and I’m having fun and I’m meeting new people, and I’m making friends.”Carroll, who dreams of becoming a robotics engineer, said, “If I get to be a robotics engineer and work on those huge things at Honda, Chromospan, all these big giant robots, if I get to do that, that’s good money, a good job, and I’m happy with that.” He and his team spent six months building their robot for the competition, facing numerous challenges along the way. “First of all, your robot on its own is complicated; you have to build the thing, program everything, it’s a lot of problems,” Carroll said, adding that his passion for solving problems made the time fly. “It takes a lot of thought and it’s the problems, I love solving.”Krista Mintz, a computer science teacher at CREATE, emphasized the importance of the competition in teaching students about the trials and errors of building. “It is the planning, but also just the doing, you just have to start doing something and then going back and making those corrections and making it better,” Mintz said.As the competition concluded, Carroll shared his plans to apply his experience at the collegiate level. “I got accepted into Auburn University off the fact that I have a 30 ACT and a lot of robotics experience. I plan on going into robotics engineering and so that’s just going to help my college career,” he said.The winners of this week’s competition will qualify to compete in the state tournament.
