MORROW COUNTY, Ohio — A Morrow County middle school robotics team is set to compete in an international competition next month.
Five students at Highland Middle School punched their ticket to the 2025 World VEX Robotics Competition by winning the state championship in March.
VEX Robotics is designed to prepare students to become future innovators. According to the organization, 95% of participants went on to pursue STEM-related careers.
The robotics team, called 6390F, will compete May 9-11 in Dallas.
The team consists of five eighth graders — Aidan Mounts, Bently Getter, Digory Richards, Gannon Fitzpatrick and Tyler Tack.
Together, they have won six of their nine tournaments this season and have earned four “Excellence Awards.”
“This team has been the hardest working I have had in my seven years at Highland Middle School. They have put in the time and effort to become state champions. They completely designed a robot in CAD last May before I would let them build. They would stay everyday after school for an hour to start their robot. It is nice to see their hard work pay off in a trip to Dallas,” said Coach Chad Russell.
Richards said they got into robotics for fun last year.
“We just got more into it and this year, especially in the beginning of the season, we started realizing we were actually doing better and we were actually better at it. That is really helpful to want to continue even more. You see yourself succeeding,” Richards said.
The team will compete against teams from 60 countries next month.
