Expert explains how artificial intelligence can be used in classrooms

LEADING THE WAY. WELL, WITH THE RISE IN AI, MANY STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND TEACHERS ARE FACED WITH NAVIGATING THE NEW FRONTIER OF TECHNOLOGY AND EDUCATION. YOU KNOW, WE’VE TALKED A LOT ABOUT THIS. MANY SEE AI AS A CRUTCH FOR STUDENTS OR MAYBE A WAY TO CHEAT. YES, WE’VE ALL HEARD ABOUT IT. AND THEY ALSO WANT POLICE TO, YOU KNOW, KNOW HOW IT’S USED IN SCHOOLS. BUT A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE SAY IT CAN BE THIS NEW TOOL THAT, IF USED PROPERLY, CAN USHER IN A NEW ERA OF TEACHING. SO JOINING US HERE ON THE COUCH THIS AFTERNOON TO TALK ABOUT AI AND WRITING IS AUTHOR AND TEACHER JULIE BOGART. JULIE, THANKS FOR BEING HERE. THANKS FOR HAVING ME. IT’S SUCH A TOPICAL TIME TO OR A TIMELY TIME TO TALK ABOUT THIS, BECAUSE ALL THE KIDS ARE HEADING BACK TO SCHOOL, YOU KNOW, WITH WITH TEXTING AND SOCIAL MEDIA, YOU WOULD THINK THAT WRITING WOULD MAYBE BE SECOND NATURE. I THINK FOR OUR STUDENTS. SO WHY DO SO MANY KIDS I KNOW MY BOYS RESIST IT, RESIST WRITING. I THINK THE WAY THAT SCHOOL APPROACHES WRITING IS EVALUATION AND PERFORMANCE ORIENTED. SO THEY ARE TRYING TO IMAGINE THE TEXT LIVING IN THE MIND OF THE TEACHER, INSTEAD OF LOOKING INSIDE AND VALUING WHAT THEY HAVE TO OFFER. SO MOST OF THEM ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW DO I GET THE GRADE THAT ALLOWS ME TO GET THE GPA? I WANT TO GO TO THE COLLEGE. I WANT TO KEEP A SCHOLARSHIP IF I’VE GOT ONE. AND SO PART OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE WAY WRITING IS TAUGHT IS IT’S PERFORMANCE BASED. IT’S NOT REALLY PROCESS BASED, PASSION BASED. YEAH, YEAH. NO, I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU GUYS, BUT I REMEMBER HAVING TO WRITE A ROUGH DRAFT AND THEN REWRITE THE PAPER. BUT NOW, JULIE, WITH THE RISE OF AI, MANY KIDS HAVE STARTED TO TURN TO THE TECHNOLOGY TO HELP THEM WRITE. WHY IS THAT? AND SHOULD WE BE CONCERNED? I DO THINK WE SHOULD BE CONCERNED. I’M NOT FULLY AGAINST AI. YOU CAN’T BE. IT’S SERVES MANY PURPOSES. BUT WHEN A CHILD IS FORMING THEIR OWN IDEAS AND INSIGHTS AND STARTING TO TAP INTO THEIR OWN INTERPRETATIONS, THEY NEED OPPORTUNITIES TO TAKE RISKS WITHOUT BEING PENALIZED. SO IMAGINE YOU’RE WRITING ABOUT SOMETHING YOU’RE REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT, AND ALL YOU GET BACK AS FEEDBACK IS VAGUE, MISSPELLED, MISSING PUNCTUATION. BUT WHAT IF THE INSTRUCTOR REALLY ENGAGED WITH THE MATERIAL AND WAS CAPABLE OF NOTICING YOUR INSIGHT, YOUR GOOD USE OF METAPHOR, THE WAY THAT YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE INFORMED YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF A HISTORICAL MOMENT? WE NEED TO SHIFT EDUCATION TO FOCUS ON THE UNIQUENESS OF THE HUMAN, BECAUSE THAT’S OUR ONLY ANTIDOTE TO AI. WE’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT AI. SO MANY PEOPLE THINK THAT IT IS SUCH A BAD TOOL FOR WRITING DEVELOPMENT, BUT CAN IT BE USED IN THE WAYS THAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT WHERE IT CAN BE USEFUL? YEAH, I THINK AI IS USEFUL SOMETIMES FOR GIVING A MODEL FOR HELPING KIDS WITH SPELLING AND PUNCTUATION. THAT EDITING AT THE END. BUT WHAT I WISH I SAW MORE OF IS THE GENERATION OF IDEAS IN WRITING THAT WERE WITHOUT A METRIC WHERE KIDS CAN TAKE THAT RISK AND NOT BE PENALIZED FOR IT. SO WHAT I’VE NOTICED WHEN I’VE WORKED WITH STUDENTS IS THAT THEY ACTUALLY WANT TO BE READ. AND UNFORTUNATELY, A LOT OF TEACHERS WHO ARE OVERBURDENED ARE RELYING ON AI TO GRADE STUDENT WRITING. SO IMAGINE THE FEELING LIKE, WHY WOULD YOU PUT OUT THIS INFORMATION IF NO ONE’S GOING TO CARE ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE TRYING TO COMMUNICATE? WHAT PARENTS CAN DO IS BE THAT FIRST POSITIVE READER. AND I WROTE ABOUT THAT IN MY BOOK, ACTUALLY, LIKE HOW YOU CAN ACTUALLY BE A SOURCE OF POSITIVE READER FEEDBACK, NOT JUST PERFORMANCE FEEDBACK. YEAH. BECAUSE AS A FORMER TEACHER’S PET, I LOVED WHEN MY TEACHER THOUGHT MY WRITING WAS GOOD. I MEAN, YOU WERE RIGHT. YES. YEAH. THERE IS THAT FEELING, RIGHT? LIKE ONE OF THE THINGS I RECOMMEND AT HOME IS LISTENING FOR THAT MOMENT WHEN YOUR CHILD SUDDENLY ERUPTS IN INTERESTING SPEECH. JOT IT DOWN WHILE THEY’RE TALKING. NOW, THEY’LL WONDER WHAT YOU’RE DOING, BUT JUST SAY TO THEM, HEY, HONEY, THIS IS TOO GOOD. I DON’T WANT TO MISS IT. I’M GOING TO WRITE IT DOWN. I WANT TO RETAIN WHAT YOU’RE TALKING TO ME ABOUT. LATER THAT NIGHT AT DINNER, READ IT ALOUD TO THE FAMILY AND VALUE WHAT THEY OFFERED THAT WAS SPOKEN AND PUT IT IN WRITING. THEY WILL, FOR THE FIRST TIME REALIZE, OH, YOU MEAN WHAT LIVES IN ME DESERVES TO BE PRESERVED IN WRITING AND READ TO AN INTERESTED AUDIENCE? I LOVE IT. I’M GOING TO PUT THIS UP FOR EVERYBODY TO SEE. AGAIN, I LOVE THE TITLE OF THIS HOW MY KID HATES WRITING. I WANT YOU TO DO ANOTHER ONE THAT SAYS, MY KID HATES READING TOO, BECAUSE I WOULD DO IT. AND ALSO, KIDS WHO LOVE WRITING WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS BOOK AS WELL. I ALWAYS WANT TO MAKE SURE I SAY THAT. YEAH, WE KNOW READING AND WRITING GO HAND IN HAND.
