Esports made its Asian Games debut as a medal sport at Hangzhou 2023. It was also a part of Jakarta 2018 as a demonstration sport.

At the Hangzhou Asian Games, medals were awarded in seven esports events – Arena of Valor Asian Games Version, DOTA 2, Dream Three Kingdoms 2, FIFA Online 4, League of Legends, PUBG and Street Fighter V: Champion Edition.

A 15-member Indian esports team competed in four esports titles – League of Legends, DOTA 2, EAFC, and Street Fighter V: Champion Edition – at Hangzhou 2023.

India’s best result came in League of Legends, where the national team reached the quarter-finals.

The inclusions are expected to strengthen India’s medal prospects.

Pavan Kampelli won bronze in eFootball at the Asian Esports Games in Bangkok last December while Pokemon UNITE has seen Indian teams compete regularly at the World Championships, with S8UL representing the country last year.

The 2026 Asian Games will feature competitions in 41 sports, including esports, and will take place from September 9 to October 4.
