HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – With artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly transforming the way we live, work, and learn, Rockingham County Public Schools (RCPS) is taking steps to prepare educators and students for the future.

During a school board work session on Thursday, the RCPS AI Team introduced its plan for integrating AI into education. The presentation covered how AI can assist teachers with lesson planning, creating presentations, and personalizing instruction while also preparing students for future careers.

“AI is something that can help both our teachers and our students. It can help parents better understand what’s happening in the school system and it can help our communication,” said Katie Moran, an Instructional Technology Resource Teacher at RCPS.

The presentation by the RCPS AI team also explored the differences between traditional AI, and generative AI like ChatGPT, and how it can be used effectively in education.

“I think that there can be a lot of negative connotations with AI. Understandably, there’s also lots of benefits, and having a balanced conversation will help everybody know how to safely and successfully use this tool” Moran added.

The AI team noted that with Governor Glenn Youngkin’s Executive Order 30 (2024) requiring school districts to establish AI policies, RCPS is ensuring responsible implementation for all stakeholders.

“We’re doing a lot of research, meeting with consultants, gathering information, and making informed choices,” said Katie Moran, an Instructional Technology Resource Teacher at RCPS. “We have a moral obligation to teach students how to use AI responsibly. AI is a tool, not a replacement for critical thinking.”

The division plans to introduce AI training for teachers and students by the 2025-2026 school year, leading to structured student use by August 2026. By taking a thoughtful, ethical approach, RCPS is ensuring AI enhances education in a meaningful and responsible way.
