Research by Prof. Dr. Igor Ivanović from the Faculty of Philology, University of Montenegro reveals that introducing artificial intelligence (AI) into teaching can significantly increase student engagement, motivation, and success.
The research involved 82 undergraduate students at the University of Montenegro, and the results show that students who used AI tools during classes had more energy for learning, greater commitment and better concentration on the material, which is directly related to better academic results, the University announced.
“Of the total number of participants, 60 students from the Faculty of Science followed classes with the help of AI tools, while 22 students from the Faculty of Metallurgy had traditional English language classes. During the semester, lasting approximately 15 weeks, the group of students who had AI tools in class used ChatGPT for personalized exercises, interactive tasks and receiving instant feedback, while the Quizizz platform enabled working with quizzes in the form of games and a more interactive approach to learning. With the help of artificial intelligence, student progress was monitored, personalized tasks and activities were designed that required direct interaction with AI tools, making learning more dynamic and tailored to individual needs,” the statement reads.
The results of the study showed that students in the AI group achieved significant improvements in all three dimensions of engagement: energy, dedication, and acquisition of material, while changes in the control group were at a lower level.
In particular, higher levels of commitment were found to be associated with better grades and exam success. Students highlighted the possibility of personalized learning, the competitive atmosphere through games through interactive quizzes, and instant feedback as the biggest advantages of the AI environment, which enabled them to learn faster and master the material more effectively.
“The author of the study emphasizes that the results must be interpreted with caution, as this research was conducted on a relatively small sample and lasted one semester, so new, more extensive and long-term research is needed. Future research by this author will monitor the impact of AI tools over a longer period of time and examine which functionalities contribute most to learning, while paying due attention to the ethics of using artificial intelligence, data privacy and equal access to technologies,” adds UCG.
This research, they said, shows that AI does not have to completely replace traditional teaching, but can complement and thereby improve it. “Integrating AI tools into the educational process opens up the possibility of students being more motivated, engaged, and successful, while providing teachers with new ways to customize content and create a more interactive and modern learning experience.”
The author of the paper, Prof. Dr. Igor Ivanović, is involved in corpus and computational linguistics, and is also interested in the use of computer programs and artificial intelligence in translation and teaching. states the UCG. In addition to his engagement as an associate professor, he is actively involved in consecutive and simultaneous translation, as well as written translation in the fields of medicine, computer science and technology.
