A South Jersey school district is taking their security system up a notch, using the power of Artificial Intelligence to not just detect guns but to automatically trigger a response when one is found.

At every public school in Glassboro, there are dozens of cameras, with a new piece of technology.

An extra layer of AI software on the cameras is designed to detect guns, sending an alert to an operations center in Conshohocken whenever one is found, so a human can verify if there is actually a weapon.

“We are trying to prevent gun related violence,” Mike Lowinger with ZeroEyes said.

ZeroEyes is the company behind it, founded in 2018. The software is now being used in nearly every state.

Now, they’re trying a new approach, integrating their system with another one called Singlewire, that sends out an instant alert to the detection of a possible gun.

Glassboro is the first district to try it out.

“With this integration we effectively reduce the time to zero seconds which obviously every second counts when we want to keep folks safe,” Glassboro Public School District Superintendent, Al Lewis, said.

Lewis said the district is thrilled to be the first to use the two systems, working in tandem.

“We recognize that there are weapons across the world and we realize the reality and the facts in rise in school shootings. We want to make sure we are taking every possible precaution to protect the occupants of our buildings and to ensure that God forbid there is an emergency, we are able to respond in the most timely manner possible,” he said.
