Valparaiso University’s Esports program has concluded a highly successful run in the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) divisional playoffs, with four teams qualifying for the upcoming national tournament.
Highlighting the program’s success, the Rocket League team clinched the Division 5 Central Championship, securing an automatic bid to the national tournament.
Additionally, the Varsity and Academy Overwatch teams both finished as runner-ups in the Division 5 Central and Division 8 Central divisions, respectively, and will both qualify for the upcoming national tournament.
The League of Legends team rounded out the impressive results with a third-place finish in the Division 3 East division, showcasing a remarkable underdog story. Entering the playoffs as the 8th seed, they defied expectations by upsetting the top-seeded team. Though they fell in the semifinals, they rallied to secure a decisive victory in the third-place match and will qualify for the upcoming national tournament with a first round matchup at 8pm tonight vs the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers.
All four teams have now qualified for the NECC National Championship Tournament, with first round matches set to take place April 15th – 25th. Fans and supporters are invited to witness the exciting action live on Twitch at twitch.tv/valpoesports.
