The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens is deploying artificial intelligence to identify students at risk of becoming “eternal students” by exceeding graduation timelines.
The AI system will analyze 30 years of student data to predict completion times and alert academic advisors when timelines are surpassed. Advisors, a position established in 2011, will then contact those students who are at risk of expulsion.
Eight in 10 Greek university students graduate beyond the standard program duration, taking an average of nearly six years to complete four-year programs, according to officials.
“Students will be informed about their graduation prospects based on their course progress and the results of older peers at the same school,” explained Professor Panayiotis Tsanakas, dean of the engineering school.
The academic advisor role has remained largely inactive at most universities.
