New types of cheating using micro earphones and artificial intelligence (AI) glasses are spreading among students who are about to take college entrance exams and national exams in the UK. TikTok even shares how to avoid the eyes of exam supervisors. The British test supervisory authority responded to the emergency, saying, “It is not easy to keep up with the pace of technological development.”
According to the British daily The Times on the 3rd (local time), the British exam supervisory authority Ofqual warned that AI-based smart devices are emerging as a new means of cheating in the college entrance exam (A level) and secondary education qualification exam (GCSE) seasons.
“Smart glasses, ultra-small earphones, and Internet-connected calculators are threatening the fairness of the test,” Offqual Chief Regulatory Officer Ian Bocom said. “It is never easy to detect such equipment in a test site.”
Videos that tell students how to cheat are spreading on social media such as TikTok. Some products are designed to hide ultra-small earphones connected to MP3 players in their ears and play recorded voice notes by pressing buttons in shoes with your toes.
In addition, smart watches that only special glasses wearers can see, engineering calculators with Internet search and message transmission and reception functions, and ballpoint pens with built-in LCD screens are also on sale.
Currently, about 1.3 million students in the UK are taking GCSE and A-level exams. Among the cases of cheating caught last year, mobile phones and smart watches accounted for 44% of the total, but supervisors are increasingly concerned about more sophisticated devices.
