TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Leon County School Board unanimously passed an artificial intelligence policy Tuesday night. The policy sets clear guidelines for how the technology can be used in classrooms.
School board member Rosanne Wood said Leon County Schools is embracing AI as a tool to enhance education.
“We’re going to use AI to make things easier, better, and we’ll be teaching our kids a skill that they need to know how to understand this and use it well,” Wood said during the school board meeting.
Under the new policy, district employees can use AI for administrative and instructional tasks, including lesson planning, communication and scheduling as long as students’ privacy rights are protected.
For students, they cannot use AI as the main way to complete assignments. Unauthorized use can be considered plagiarism, according to the policy.

The item stated that any student found using these tools without permission or in a prohibited manner will be disciplined in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
“We want to make sure we have rules in place that protect our teachers and protect our students,” said Lewis Blessing, the district’s director of curriculum services. “We cannot continue to allow it to be used unchecked. That’s why this conversation is so important.”
Teachers like Natalee Harrison said AI misuse is already a concern in classrooms, noting some students submit assignments that don’t reflect their work.
“That is one of the fears that teachers have is that students will use it and not use critical thinking skills because AI will do it for them,” Harrison said.
The policy also gives teachers discretion to allow students to use AI in their classrooms.
The district has launched training sessions to help staff learn how to incorporate AI into teaching responsibly.
