A New Jersey university is debuting a cutting-edge new major. Kean University announced that students can now get degrees in artificial intelligence.

It’s a new program this year. The program chair says it is about preparing students for the jobs that are available in the AI field. There are fewer than 15 universities around the country offering a major in AI.

There’s coursework on developing systems and problem-solving. The university has also invested in top-of-the-line processors.

Students told News 12 that they are working on projects like using a person’s heartbeat to access secure information instead of using something like a facial scan. Another student is working on an improved way to detect guns in a public area, other than just a metal detector.

“This type of enabling, and the research, is really where our students, I think, are going to shine. It’s not only the generative AI, but also the deep applications, the deep understanding and building the tools with AI that will be used tomorrow,” says Patricia Morreale, the university’s computer science chair.

News 12 will have more on Kean’s program tonight at 10 p.m.
