The University of Nebraska at Omaha Esports organization has steadily grown over the past two years with new leadership and an ever-growing passion among the electronic sports members.
Esports President, Jared Forsberg, took over the club two years ago. Esports refers to highly organized competitive multiplayer video game leagues and events. It has been an ever-growing cultural phenomenon.
According to a market report by Allied Market Research, the Global Esports Market is projected to reach $16.7 billion by the year 2033.
This rise of popularity is reflected in the ever-evolving Esports student organization, which invites all students to partake in the joys of the game. Students have the option to join a team on the varsity or junior varsity level. A variety of different games are represented including but not limited to Valorant, Overwatch, Apex Legends and Rocket League.
Forsberg has played a big role in shaping the organization into what it is today. Prior to his management, the club had no proper on-campus meeting space and few substantial sponsors.
The group now boasts a sizeable Esports room located at the Peter Kiewit Institute in room 270, complete with atmospheric lighting, numerous computer setups and slick gaming chairs, courtesy of AndaSeat, a prominent sponsor.
Forsberg described his future aspirations as president of the organization as he pivots away from his previous fulfilled dreams.
“I think my biggest goal originally, when I first came, was to get a room,” Forsberg said. “Obviously, I got lucky. I got that really quick, which was amazing. I think ever since then, my goals have kind of focused [on] leading us to being one of the more top teams in at least a couple different titles and trying to get us to the point where we do get scholarships for Esports.”
Despite being the president of the organization, Forsberg makes time to partake in the Valorant team. His duality as both a player and president can be seen clearly.
Surprisingly, Forsberg stated that cold calling sponsors was what brings him the strongest sense of gratification and reward. However, traveling with his team to various competitions is what he perceives as the most memorable and fun.
The organization continues to evolve along with the rapidly growing Esports industry, providing a fun, collaborative and competitive outlet for any Maverick who would like to partake in the action.
