Boise, ID (CBS2) — Boise State Esports made a significant impact over the weekend, securing two championships at the Power Esports Conference Championship (PEC) held at the HyperX Arena inside the Luxor Hotel. The Broncos emerged victorious in both the Rocket League and Overwatch championships, defeating Power 4 schools such as Kansas, Oklahoma, Syracuse, USC, Michigan State, Nebraska, and Ohio State.
Boise State was the only school to win a championship while also sending four teams to the event. Dr. Chris Haskell, Head Coach of Boise State Esports, expressed his pride in the team’s achievements. “Our success at PEC isn’t just about winning games—it’s about proving that Boise State belongs on the biggest stages in collegiate esports,” said Haskell. “I couldn’t be more proud of our players, our coaching staff, and everyone behind the scenes who made this possible.”
In the Rocket League Championship, the Broncos defeated Michigan State 4-1. Cade “Wuzy” Hall led Boise State to the inaugural PEC Rocket League title, solidifying his status as a premier player. The Broncos started strong, winning the first three games before Michigan State claimed a game in overtime. However, Boise State’s supporters rallied behind the team, helping them secure the championship.
The Overwatch championship saw Boise State dominate Syracuse in a clean sweep. The Broncos opened with a strong performance on Lijiang Tower, with Jonathan “Clear” Foraker and Cannon “Stryder” Miller leading aggressive plays. Boise State’s coordination shone on King’s Row, and they adapted swiftly on Watchpoint Gibraltar to seal the sweep and the championship.
Boise State’s success extended beyond the championships, as they collected numerous individual awards. Dr. Chris Haskell was named Overwatch Coach of the Year, while Payton Wilkin received Rocket League Coach of the Year. Cade “Wuzy” Hall and Jonathan “Clear” Foraker were named Tournament MVPs for Rocket League and Overwatch, respectively.
The Broncos are now preparing for the CECC National Championships in Arlington, Texas, from May 2-4, where they will compete in Rocket League, Overwatch, Valorant, and Street Fighter 6.
