WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – School systems are constantly looking for new ways to keep students and staff safe.
The school board in New Hanover County got a look at new technology that uses artificial intelligence to detect danger before it happens.
“Whether we like it or not it’s here and it’s gonna get more prevalent, so why not be a part of the pilot and test it out and then we’ll really know what we want and what we don’t want,” said New Hanover County Board Member Pat Bradford.
The technology has received mixed reactions from some parents and teachers.
One concern is whether the data and images the system collects will remain private.
Shawn Hall, who made the presentation from his company Eviden Technology, says those concerns can be addressed.
“We’re not doing any collecting your information,” said Hall.
“It sees somebody fall and it’s gonna say I saw somebody fall on this camera and send an alert to whoever it’s supposed to send an alert to,” said Hall.
Bradford said some schools in the system could benefit from this kind of technology.
“Imagine a school like New Hanover with as many doors as it has,” said Bradford.
“It would monitor those doors you don’t have to put a human on it that could take a bathroom break, they could fall asleep at their desk, it’s got a lot of pluses,” said Bradford.
Right now, it is between New Hanover County and Davidson County where the pilot program will happen.
